Porcelain Veneers: A New Smile | Ardas Family Dental
For some people, braces alone do not provide the perfect smile that they’ve dreamed of. If you’re someone who feels like you’re always hiding an unhappy smile, porcelain veneers may be a good choice!
What Are Veneers?
Veneers can be used to improve your smile—but what exactly are they? Porcelain veneers, also called porcelain laminates, are very thin shells designed to cover the front surface of teeth.
They are custom-made to fit the surface of each patient’s unique smile, but are optimally shaped and sized to improve the appearance of the smile overall! They are made from a tooth-colored porcelain, which is matched to the natural color of each patient’s teeth.
Who Are They For?
Veneers are a good choice for fixing teeth that are badly discolored, slightly chipped, or uneven or irregularly shaped. They’re also good for closing space between teeth with gaps.
If you have a tooth that is badly damaged, crooked teeth that can be straightened with traditional braces or discolored teeth that can benefit from whitening procedures, your dentist will likely recommend a different procedure to achieve your ideal smile!
How Are Veneers Placed?
Like any dental procedure, the first step to getting a dental veneer is to visit your dentist for a consultation. It is essential that you talk to your dentist about the result that you’re looking for.
Your dentist will examine your teeth and make the final call on whether veneers are the right choice for achieving the smile that you want, or if there’s a choice that is better for your unique needs!
Once it’s determined that veneers are right for you, the dentist will prepare your tooth or teeth for a veneer. This generally requires removing about a half millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface.
After your tooth surface has been prepped for veneers, the dentist will make a model or impression of the affected area. The model is then used to construct your veneer. Temporary dental veneers may be placed during this time while the veneers are being made.
Once the veneers are completed, it’s time for them to be placed. Your dentist will spend some time making sure the fit, shape and color are just right. Then the dentist will clean, polish and etch your natural tooth before finally bonding your new veneers with strong dental cement.
